FREE EVENT: Photosensitive - A conversation with Bea Nettles, Creator of the Iconic 1970 Mountain Dream Tarot

$0.00

Tuesday, August 6th

7pm

In 1970, Bea Nettles embarked on a groundbreaking project that led to the creation of the Mountain Dream Tarot, considered to be the first fully realized photographic tarot deck. During a summer teaching photography at the Penland School of Crafts in North Carolina and for the next five years, she meticulously crafted card after card, drawing inspiration from her family, artist friends, and their skills, using the wild Appalachian Mountains as a backdrop.

In this event, we will share a curated selection of images, offering a visual feast of Nettles' innovative artistry and explore some stories behind the creation of her deck and its different iterations. Together, we’ll also look into the technical challenges and triumphs she faced while staging, printing, and even sewing the sensitive hippy dreamscape that is her Tarot.

Bea Nettles is an acclaimed American photographer and multimedia artist known for her innovative blend of photography and printmaking. Born in 1946, her work explores themes of family, memory, and the passage of time. Her work is held in major collections, including the Museum of Modern Art and the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
