Join us today for a conversation with Christophe Poncet to celebrate Down Here, the first volume in his meticulously researched and beautifully illustrated trilogy, The Tarot of Marsilio, published through Scarlet Imprint. Challenging the prevailing academic view of the Tarot de Marseille, This groundbreaking work proposes its roots in Renaissance Florence and linking it to Marsilio Ficino’s hermetic philosophy.
Through a careful analysis of artworks, philosophical texts, and the imagery and symbolism of the cards, Poncet places the deck in 1470s Florence. Marsilio Ficino—translator of the Corpus Hermeticum and the complete works of Plato—is identified as the likely mastermind behind this extraordinary tarot.
Through our conversation, Poncet will explore the profound imagery and meaning of key trumps, touching on all the major arcana. Poncet will share his unique perspective, opening up a conversation about the esoteric origins and rich history of the Tarot de Marseille. For tarot readers, historians and occultists alike, his work offers fresh, unconventional insights into the symbolism and meaning of these iconic cards, reshaping our understanding of their historical significance and practical use.
Drawing on history, philosophy and iconology, Christophe Poncet’s research on the Tarot de Marseille follows the path of an initiatory quest. On his nineteenth birthday, the amazement of his encounter with this language of enigmas ignited the engine of his inquiry, guided by the intuition that the key lay hidden in the origins of the deck. Ignorant of his goal like the Fool, Poncet strayed from the beaten tracks of occultist theories. A meticulous investigation led him to a precise dating and localization of the prototype: Florence circa 1470, the cradle of the Italian Renaissance.
At the same time, reading Plato, Poncet observed that several cards stage Platonic myths.Connecting Renaissance Florence and Platonism, a mastermind emerged: Marsilio Ficino, the first translator of Plato’s works and of the Corpus Hermeticum, philosopher, mage, astrologist, and the savant who probably lent his forename to the Tarot de Marseille. Poncet’s research has led him to produce a documentary film, The Mysteries of the Tarot of Marseille, and to publish articles in academic journals on the tarot and on Ficino, as well as three books: Le Choix de Laurent, Two Esoteric Tarots (with P. M. Adams) and The Tarot of Marsilio. Down there.
