In the folk-Catholic tradition of Portugal, votive offerings, or "ex-votos," are burned in Church pyres to express gratitude, seek divine intervention, or fulfill a vow. These offerings are dedicated to saints or the Virgin Mary to ask for graces or in hope of future blessings.

This heart-shaped ex-voto was purchased from The Sanctuary of Our Lady of Fátima. Located in Portugal, this shrine commemorates apparitions of the Virgin Mary to three shepherd children in 1917. The Sanctuary of Our Lady of Fátima has since become a major destination for Roman Catholic pilgrimage, especially on the anniversary days of the apparitions, May 13 and October 13. 

In the folk-Catholic tradition, a heart-shaped ex-voto may be used to signify deep love and devotion to the Virgin Mary, expressing heartfelt emotion and gratitude. More literally, a heart-shaped ex-voto may also be offered for the healing of a heart-related matters, romance, cardiac ailment or illness.
